Seven ancient Japanese tales << Back
Taken from popular knowledge, the seven otogibanashi (entertainment stories) give us back the wisdom of the Japanese thought, highlighting the fragmentary nature of human existence.
✓ The protagonists are anthropomorphized animals that immediately make us forget their nature. Inside the book, they are well combined with the xylographies that, showing us a part of the whole, help us to see the other side of reality.
✓ The events, ranging from grotesque to dramatic and from surreal to terribly concrete, always retaining the characteristic of entering the deepest human spirit.
✓ Themes: arrogance, bullying, but also loyalty, consistency, and many others.
The illustrations are scans of original woodcuts that survived the fire in the museum in which they were placed. True artworks from the Enzo Bartolone ‘s collection.
